The term art conjures different thoughts in different peoples minds. For some people art is misunderstood,
and considered just something pretty to look at. For others art establishes deeper connections within them.
It stirs emotion and passion. Art
allows the artist to convey various sentiments; what the artist is feeling or,
maybe on a deeper level, what the artist whishes he or she felt. Art, therefore, can both be aesthetic
and emotive.
I
draw inspiration from a variety of areas, as well as a variety of different
artists. They vary greatly in
scope and style. From more
traditional artists ranging form Rembrandt van Rijn to George Bellows to Chuck
Close. Most particularly Leonardo
da Vinci, the epitome of the Renaissance man, who could paint and draw and
sculpt as well as he could engineer buildings, war machines, and flying contraptions
centuries ahead of their time. I have
great esteem for concept artists like Ralph McQuarrie who, through their
designs and illustrations, can take a film with a great story and give it the
feeling that the universe it takes place in may actually exist somewhere out
there.
I also personally
admire much less traditional artists such as comic book artists including Bob
Kane, Jack Kirby, Jim Lee, Joe Kubert and Alex Ross. These individuals are able to turn out 36-page books of
stellar looking drawings on a monthly basis. In another non-traditional sense, I am also inspired by the
visuals video games present, and the stunning concept art that provides the
basis for what gives these fictional domains life and a sense of existence.
Thomas Merton once
said, “Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same
time.” There are many different
forms of art in our world and be it painting or sculpture, or drawing on paper
or on a computer, artists provide us with both a window into their soul as well
as the opportunity to look deeper within ourselves. I truly believe that there are few other things in this
world that allow us to do something that intense and profound, and am therefore
glad to be a part, no matter how small, of the visuals arts field.
In the future, I
hope to pursue a career in the graphic design field. However I hope to be able to apply many of the lessons I’ve
learned form the fine arts to my work as a graphic designer, computer artist,
or illustrator- whatever career path I choose to follow most closely- in order
to create work that is both attractive as well as unique and my own. I hope to do justice to those who have
come before and with whom I consider my peers, but I also strive to carve out a
little niche of the art world to call my own.
